HVAC companies work to ensure the comfort of our homes, especially during scorching summers and chilly winters. As a homeowner, it’s important to understand how your HVAC unit works, so Connolly Heating and Air Conditioning is here to discuss one of its basic processes: the refrigeration cycle.
As we dive deeper into how this process works, keep in mind that there are three ways heat can be transferred: radiation or absorption; conduction through a substance such as metal; and convection through water, air or refrigerant. The last method is what’s used by HVACs.
Here are the four components of your unit involved in the refrigeration cycle:
1.) Evaporator – In the evaporator, warm air passes through the coil where the refrigerant is located. The refrigerant then takes the heat in and in turn distributes cold air out.
2.) Compressor – The compressor is the heart of the refrigeration cycle. It circulates the refrigerant within the system, compressing cold vapor into hot vapor and increasing vapor pressure.
3.) Condenser – The condenser is the coil in the outer central air conditioning system which gets rid of the heat brought to the refrigerant, expelling hot air.
4.) Metering Device – This device regulates the flow of refrigerant to the evaporator. Some devices limit pressure to prevent the compressor from overloading, while others control evaporator pressure or superheat.
The cycle begins with the compressor, which expels high-pressure, high-temperature vapor through the discharge line. The fan on the condenser then releases heat over the coil, and the high-pressure vapor is converted into high-pressure liquid.
This liquid then reaches the metering device, which will lower its pressure and temperature. As it passes the suction line, it transforms into high pressure, high-temperature liquid and the cycle repeats.
If one of these components malfunctions, then the rest of the cycle will fail, necessitating air conditioning repair.
Learning how these units work will help homeowners better care for their HVAC systems.
